Gandhi Smriti - New Delhi - Helpful Information for Visitors

Gandhi Smriti is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Formerly known as Birla House or Birla Bhavan, Gandhi Smriti is a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi.

This is the location where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and was assassinated on January 30, 1948.

Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule.

Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

In India, he is also called Bapu and Gandhiji.

He is unofficially called the Father of modern India.

The complex has preserved the room where Mahatma Gandhi lived.

You can walk through the house to see the Spartan way he lived and his spinning wheel.

You can follow his footsteps on the day he was killed.

Once you get to the end of the lawn, you must take off your shoes and can walk along a designated path.

A Martyr's Column stands at the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was killed.

Behind the lawn, you will find a small chapel-like structure where Gandhi often mediated and led prayer/ meditation services.

There is a display along the side of the lawn near the house with pictures, newspaper clippings, and historical accounts of Gandhi’s life from childhood to his life in England and then in South Africa.

It provides some insight into how he came to his enlightened state and life philosophy of non-violence.

A large statue of Mahatma Gandhi, with a boy and a girl holding a dove in their hands standing on each side of Gandhi, greets visitors at the main entrance of the Gandhi Smriti.

It is the work of the renowned sculptor Sri Ram Sutar.

It is inscribed with "My Life is My Message" at the base of the statue.

Along the front of the complex adjacent to the Birla house is the Museum.

On display in the Museum are photographs, sculptures, paintings, frescos, inscriptions on rocks, and relics from the years Mahatma Gandhi spent here.

You can also see a multimedia film at 1:00 pm.
