Hiroshima - Itsukushima Shrine - Travel Guide


This is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima.

The iconic image is the large floating torii gate and shrine.

The Itsukushima shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and considered a National Treasure of Japan.

This shrine is dedicated to the daughters of Susano-o no Mikoto, Shinto god of seas and storms

The red entrance gate, or torii, can be accessed at low tide by land or on a half hour boat ride.

A peaceful, and picturesque setting- a must see when in Hiroshima prefecture.

Getting There

 

By JR Rail from Hiroshima Station :
Take the JR Sanyo line toward Iwakuni
Exit at JR Miyajima-guchi station
Walk to Ferry Dock
Take the JR ferry or Matsuda Kisen ferry to the Miyajima island

By Tram from A-bomb or Hiroshima Station stop :
Take the Tram Hiroshima ‘Dentetsu’ to Miyajima Guchi by Hiroden @ 1 hour
Exit at JR Miyajima-guchi station
Walk to Ferry Dock
Take the JR ferry or Matsuda Kisen ferry to the Miyajima island

 

Recommendations

 

- The amount of time you spend at the shrine will depend on your interest.
  The shrine complex will take at least 2 hours. This island has many tourist activities so plan on at least 1 day.

- Take the 1/2 boat tour. Reservations need to be made before you come.
  Check with your hotel concierge or travel agent.

- The Torii gate is accessible by land during low tide. Check tide times before you go.

- Good to combine with other attractions in the area like the Miyajima Ropeway up to Mt. Misen.
