Mumbai area - Public Transportation
Taxi Cabs | There are two types of regular taxi cabs in Mumbai – (1) Black with yellow roof top (non air-conditioned ) taxi cabs (2) Blue with silver roof top (air-conditioned) taxi cabs
Both types of taxi cabs are required to use pay meters in Mumbai. Air conditioned taxi cabs cost more than the non Air Conditioned ones. |
Local (Metro/Subway) trains | Mumbai Subway trains are called local trains. Mumbai local trains are the lifeline of Mumbai transport for local people. Trains are fast and inexpensive, however very crowded. Tourist spots are not close or convenient to the local train station.
There are three local lines: 1). Western line – Runs along the Western part of the city 2). Central Line - Runs through the Central part of the city 3). Harbor lines – Runs along the Eastern edge of the city
Local trains are frequent during the day (every 2-5 minutes) and run from 4:30am till 12.30 - 1 am. |
Auto rickshaw | Three-wheeler auto-rickshaws run outside the central city area beyond Mahim on the Western line and beyond Sion on the Central line. All rickshaws have pay meters. They are good for short distance travel. They seat up to 3 and have NO place to keep big luggage bags. |
Public Buses | Mumbai public bus fares are inexpensive and buses go everywhere. However, for overseas visitors it might be difficult to navigate routes, bus numbers, and stops. Red colored buses and double decker buses are non Air conditioned. Purple colored buses are airconditioned. Sometime purple colored buses are difficult to see as they covered with advertisement. All buses have their destinations written in Hindi/Marathi in the front of the bus and in English on the left side next to the entry door. |
